Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Musa Muhammad Sada, has said that Nigeria would soon commence its first major gold mining of over 620, 000 ounces in Osun State.
Sada made this known yesterday in Abuja while launching the Field Procedures Manual for Geochemical Mapping of Nigeria.
He said so far, over 15 foreign companies have commenced exploration of Nigerian mineral resources across the country.
“As of today, over fifteen foreign companies have commenced exploration in Nigeria and the first major gold mining will soon commence in Osun State where over 620, 000 ounces of gold have been established by CGA,” he said.
The minister said the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) has sufficient information on Nigerian minerals so as to reassure prospective investors into the country’s mining sector.
He said some local ceramic industries that are using local raw materials will soon commence operations, thereby generating employment.
The minister also said the reform strategy to make Nigeria a mining nation is on course.
He said the mining industry should contribute significantly to Nigeria’s macroeconomic indices, create wealth and reduce poverty among small-scale miners.
Sada also said the Nigerian Minerals and Mining Act 2007 is also being supported by the Minerals Cadastre System which is operational and is now processing mining applications at an accelerated speed.
